Border officials at the Port of New York/Newark seized 35 pounds of cocaine from aboard a shipping container last month, having unearthed it from among 1,050 cartons of wine. This pool party's going to suck now.
The container initially shipped off from Australia before making a stop in Panama, from which it headed to Port Newark, New Jersey on October 28. Customs officials conducted a routine search, but found nestled among the many gallons of wine a suspicious black duffel bag, the contents of which tested positive for cocaine.
The drugs were bundled into a total of 13 bricks that together weighed just over 35 pounds.
“The CBP officers assigned to the Port of New York/Newark take their responsibility of disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics to the United States very seriously,” New York Field Operations Director Robert E. Perez said in a statement. “This is just the latest example of CBP officers demonstrating vigilance, integrity and service to country.”
