Police arrested a Staten Island man yesterday after his 11-year-old son shot himself in the left middle finger with his pop's illegal gun. Michael Bilotto, a 46-year-old DEP construction worker and father of four, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
The gun went off yesterday around 2:40 p.m. in the Bilotto's single-family West Brighton home, according to the NYPD. The victim appears to have been home alone in the basement with his 8-year-old brother when the accident occurred—authorities say both parents were at work at the time. After the gunshot, the boy was quickly taken by EMT to Richmond University Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Neighbors were incredulous Bilotto would have a firearm with four kids, let alone an illegal one. "I can’t believe that they would have a gun in the house," an immediate neighbor told the Advance.
