Mayor Bloomberg announces guns for money program in 2002; Photo:

There were 11 murders in the city as well as many non-fatal, crime-related injuries, this past weekend, startling most New Yorkers, who have been enjoying more than a decade of lower crime rates. The Police Commissioner told reporters, "The rash of homicides over the weekend is exceptional because of record low crime in New York"; the Mayor took the opportunity to blame the number of guns still on the street, as their one purpose is "to kill." (The photo is from a 2002 initiative to exchange guns for cash.) Through last weekend, the city is still below the 2003 number of murders based on the same period (273 killings, versus 2003's 307), with crime still down 11%. Gothamist knows that the city is safer, and many of them were probably motivated by other criminal activity, but it is still crazy to have 11 killings over a weekend.

Most of the murders, since they were coming right after another, didn't receive much specific attention, but the 10th murder, one of two on the Lower East Side, has been singled out, coming at the heels of the "crime spree," and especially since there seemed to be a motive - it was for the victim's gold chain. And we're constructed a rough timeline of the murders below.
