After dropping the season series to the Devil Rays in 2005, it was important for the Yankees to get off to a good start against them in 2006. Tampa didn’t field their usual lineup and Mike Mussina shut them down giving up one run over six plus innings in the Yankees 9-1 victory.
Derek Jeter was the offensive star of the game, starting things off with a two-run homer while going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI’s. Jeter is off to a great start, hitting .391 so far while getting on base at a .494 clip. Jason Giambi continued his hot start going 2 for 3 with three RBI’s.
As happy as they are about Mussina’s performance, the Yankees need to see similar efforts from Chien-Ming Wang tonight and Shawn Chacon tomorrow. Both Wang and Chacon have been inconsistent this year and both will be pitching in Fenway Park next week when New York gets its first look at Boston.
