The tragedy that has swept across the Indian Ocean from Somalia to Sri Lanka to Thailand has prompted many people to ask Gothamist what they can do to help victims of this horrible natural disaster.
The best and most immediate thing you can do is donate money to one of the many service organizations that are currently working to provide medicine, clean water, shelter and other forms of support to victims. While many groups and governments have pledged their support, more money will be needed as the tsunamis' true toll is counted.
Here's a very short list of organizations that are accepting donations to help with the relief effort:
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
UNICEF.
Doctors Without Borders.
A more comprehensive list can be found on this page at CNN.com. Your money will be put to work immediately.
Ask Gothamist wishes it went without saying, but if you choose to give to smaller, lesser-known groups, please do your homework before donating.
