2005_12_sworldcup.jpgIt is the most watched sporting event in the world and while the US has participated the last four times, they are still viewed as novices in the sport the everyone else refers to as football.

Friday was the drawing for the 2006 World Cup, which will be played in Germany, and if the US team does well this time around, they will eliminate any doubts about their soccer prowess. The US team will be placed into the infamous “group of death” the hardest group of the tournament and forced to play perennial power Italy, the number two ranked team in the world, the Czech Republic and African heavyweight Ghana in the first round. Only the two top teams from each group advance, so the US team will have its’ work cut out for them.

Defending champion Brazil has a fairly easy group with Japan, Australia and Croatia, as does Germany with Poland, Costa Rica and Ecuador. England should find a way to advance in their group and Argentina should as well, thought they may face a strong challenge from a tough Netherlands team. Mexico, France and Spain should also find their way into the second round.

Matches start June 9th of next year and culminate with the finals in Berlin on July 9th. In 2002 it was reported that 28.8 billion viewers watched the World Cup, will you be one of them this time around?
