With the summer tourists gone from the Jitney (at least until next year) and summer shares finished for the season, it’s actually the perfect time for a day trip or weekend getaway to the Hamptons. A quieter contemplative mood settles over the area and gorgeous sunsets sweep over the ocean at the end of each day.

Settle in to a watercolor or ceramics class at The Art Barge, a World War I barge anchored in Napeague Harbor, Amagansett, and be inspired by the changing colors of the sea. Or hike in the Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, with dense mature oak woodlands and tidal creeks. And if it’s raining, drive over to East Hampton and spend your afternoon browsing through Harper’s Books, a bookstore specializing in photography books, with a gallery attached. For lunch or dinner, swing by Duryea’s in Montauk and enjoy a lobster roll and steamed mussels and watch the light change on the outdoor deck.
