Momofuku Milk Bar opened up shop at their new SoHo location today and the Crack Pie addicts were out in force. David Chang and Christina Tosi's chain of funky-flavored baked goods and breads now has a window service stand built into the neighboring Band of Outsiders. The window has an adjacent seating area with a few wooden benches to enjoy the sugary rewards of braving tourists with shopping bags.
The line to try Momofuku's signature cornflake marshmallow cookies and cracked pie formed partially down the block, challenging Central Perk's recent dominance of sidewalk lines. Those waiting were rewarded with a sample of the Salty Pistachio soft serve, exclusive to the SoHo location. Is it worth making the stop to Wooster Street? The rich, nutty flavor is strong and pleasantly supplemented with hints of cardamom. After a few licks, though, the salt comes through with fervor. Before eating a whole cone, it may be wise to grab a bottle of water. As one line-waiter remarked, the sample was "memorable, but this may be the perfect size of it."
Service was quick and the line moved swiftly, but here's one thing to note: this location accepts plastic only. (One employee says the location's small size simply isn't conducive to keeping cash on premises.)
