It's somewhat strange that an Olympic event would take place before the opening ceremonies of the games, but that's just what happened yesterday. The United States defeated Greece, the host country, in women's soccer, 3-0. Wednesday was the first day of Olympic action and women's soccer is the only event before the opening ceremonies.
In front of a less than capacity crowd of 15,757 (27,000 seat stadium), Mia Hamm had one goal and an assist during the victory. The Greek team did not get much support despite having a supposed home field advantage in Crete. Apparently that's what happens when women's soccer isn't a big sport in the host country.
The opening ceremonies are this Friday, with Olympic action ending August 29th. Gothamist Sports is going to attempt covering every sport at least once, call us crazy.
It's sparse now, but check out all our Olympics coverage.
