• The Giants made it official today, naming Jerry Reese Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the club. Reese had been in charge of player personnel and is probably most famous for insisting that the Giants select Osi Umenyiora in the second round of the 2003 draft.

Besides the Umenyiora pick, Reese has been widely respected for his work in scouting and was considered in many circles as a potential GM for some time. Since Reese comes from within the organization, that should simply personnel decisions and prevent any conflicts with Tom Coughlin.

Reese will have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. With TIki Barber gone, the Giants have to find at least a complementary back to Brandon Jacobs and the secondary needs a major overhaul. In addition, Reese and the rest of the team will have to prepare for the first regular-season NFL game across the Atlantic. The Dolphins will “host” the Giants in London sometime next fall which should make for a spectacle abroad and some interesting travel planning for the teams.

  • While London will get a NFL game, New York will get the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball has decided that the 2008 All-Star Game will be played at Yankee Stadium, the last year the Stadium will be used. With the 2009 openings of “New” Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, expect the All-Star Game to return again shortly.
