The Yankees needed another pitcher and they got one they knew well. Andy Pettitte is coming back to the Bronx, a move that should make Yankees’ fans very happy.
It also makes the team better. With questions about Randy Johnson’s back and Carl Pavano’s heart, the Yankees faced the prospect of entering the season with more question marks than pitchers in their rotation. No longer, now they know they will have a 1-2-3 of Wang, Mussina and Pettitte, one of the better combinations in the American League. And, his return also could pave the way for Roger Clemens coming back to the team as well.
With the return of Pettitte, the Yankees have one more sentimental decision to make, should they bring back Bernie Williams? They already have four outfielders, but they might be tempted to bring Bernie back for one last season. Bernie had a much better 2006 than 2005, but he is 38 and very limited defensively.
But those are questions for another day, for now fans can dig into their closet and get their #46 jerseys out again. Only a little more than two months until pitchers and catchers report!
