After two weeks of winter sports competition, the 2006 Torino Games have officially come to a close. Winning the medal tally was Germany with 29 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, 6 bronze). Second was the United States, which had 25 (9, 9, 7), and Canada was third with 24 (7, 10, 7). The US total was its higest outside of the United States, where it had 34 in the 2002 Salt Lake City games.
The ceremony included a performances by Ricky Martin (we didn't know he still had a career) and Avril Lavigne, who looked very cleaned up and not so much into Sk8er Boys anymore. Maybe she's into snowboard boys now? The Olympic flag was passed to Sam Sullivan, the Mayor of Vancouver, a quadriplegic since the age of 19 when he was injured in a skiing accident. He did the traditional flag waiving using a special attachment to his wheelchair.
The Olympic flame next travels to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Games and to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games. And as a bonus for Gothamist, one of the mascots for the 2008 Games is Jingjing the Panda.
