With the Mets eliminated from the playoffs, the only role left was that of spoiler. That's exactly what they did this weekend, taking two of three from the Cubs who are trying to win the National League wild card. After losing the first game on Friday, the Mets won the final two games of the series. The first win was an extra inning win on Saturday and Sunday's win gave the Mets the series.

On Sunday, Al Leiter faced Cubs ace Kerry Wood with Leiter getting some help from the offense early. The Mets picked up three runs in the first inning off Wood, who was less than steady. Leiter pitched six strong innings of two hit ball, giving up two runs in the fourth inning, which could have been worse. With bases loaded, Leiter got a called third strike against Moises Alou that ended the inning, allowing the Mets to go on and win, 3-2 (box score).

After the game, the Mets made their rookies dress up in some lovely outfits. Jose Reyes was in sequin covered clown outfit, Kaz Matsui was Spiderman, David Wright was "fruty-licious", Craig Brazell was a lady bug, Victor Diaz was Batman and Tyler Yates donned a grass skirt.
