Could the Mets be playing their best baseball when they need it most? Or are they just fooling themselves into thinking they are contenders? With a week left before the non-waiver trade deadline, do they even need to improve? They probably do, but if they keep playing like they have recently, they might be good enough to make some noise. With a 6-0 victory over the Dodgers yesterday, the Mets finished their 10-game homestand with 7 wins.

Kris Benson threw a season-high 125 pitches for his 7th win of the season. He allowed only 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings of work. Benson was aided by #6 hitter Mike Piazza, who was 3-3 with 3 RBI including a two-run a 425-foot home run into the Pepsi Picnic Area in left field.

Newsday points out that the Mets are 4 games over .500 for the first time since June 6th, but more importantly, they are 3.5 games behind the Braves and Nationals for the NL East lead and the NL Wild Card. We'll see how that holds up as they take the show on the road against the dismal Rockies and the Wild Card contending Astros.
