The Rangers need fixing and fast. Facing a team that hadn’t won all season on the road and needed to take two buses, a ferry and then walk part of the way to MSG, New York dropped a 4-2 contest to Florida Wednesday night.
Ed Belfour had a great game in net, stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced, but the Rangers lost this game on the defensive side of the ice. Kasparitis and Malek look slow and bad and apart from Ward, there wasn’t much effort behind the blue line. That doesn’t excuse the forwards he spent too much time ignoring their defensive responsibilities.
With the loss, New York drops to 4-5 on the season and now heads out west for an extended road trip. With four games in six nights, a home game against the Sabres a week from Sunday and then three more road games, New York has to get off on the right foot Saturday in Phoenix.
