• Mets 8 Nationals 4: Boy did they need this one. With the division lead down to 1-1/2 games, the Mets could not afford to get swept by Washington and they showed some fight Wednesday night, by getting a game they had to have. And, perhaps best of all, the Phillies lost in extra innings, putting the division lead back at 2-1/2 games.

Moises Alou shook off an injury and provided three hits and a RBI. David Wright had 3 RBI’s and Jorge Sosa pitched two solid innings of relief. The only down note was that Paul LoDuca got hit by a pitch and had to leave the game. His status is listed as day-to day.

  • Yankees 2 Orioles 1: The “Joba Rules” have been changed as Chamberlain came into the game in the middle of an inning for the first time, but the result was the same- no runs. Mariano made things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases, but ultimately got the job done. Boston and Detroit both lost again which means the Yankees are 5-1/2 up in the wild card and 1-1/2 behind in the division.
