- Oakland 7 Yankees 0: Not only did the Yankees lose on Saturday, but they managed only a single hit in the game, Johnny Damon’s single to center in the sixth. Apart from that, they were totally embarrassed, giving a half-assed performance in another utterly forgettable game in an utterly forgettable season.
The Yankees’ offense is completely off the tracks and it won’t matter what trade they make if players like Damon, Abreu, Cano and Matsui don’t start performing up to their ability. 37-40, four games left until the halfway point , 11 ½ back in the division and it’s Steinbrenner’s birthday on Wednesday. Anyone want to bet the fireworks won’t just be over the East River this year?
- Mets 8 Phillies 3: The Mets are sending a very clear message to the Phillies this weekend: you are not winning the division this year. After sweeping Philadelphia on Friday, New York used the long ball to bludgeon them on Saturday. Paul LoDuca hit a home run in the first and Carlos Beltran added two more and the Mets will go for the sweep this afternoon.
- Columbus 1 Red Bulls 0: Juan Pablo Angel didn’t score and the Red Bulls went down to defeat after a goal in the 69th minute.
- Hudson Valley 7 Brooklyn 5: The Cyclones couldn’t overcome a 7-1 deficit and lost.
- Staten Island 9 Aberdeen 4: John Axford pitched four innings of relief while allowing only one run for the save.
