• Islanders 2 Rangers 1: Bryan Berard is a guy you have to root for, regardless of what team he plays for. In 2000 he suffered a horrific eye injury, one that should have made visors mandatory for all players, but he came back and played again after seven eye operations. The former rookie of the year with the Islanders missed most of last year after back surgery and he had to fight his way onto the Islanders roster, only securing his spot Tuesday. That move paid off right away for the Islanders as Berard scored the game-winning goal on a 5-on-3 power-play in the second period.

Berard’s play will get the attention, but the win would have been impossible with out a great night by Rick DiPietro. DiPeitro had 36 saves and kept the Rangers from scoring the tying goal as they dominated the third period. Surprisingly, there were no fights in this game, but with seven more games between these two enemies, there is plenty of time for fireworks.
