- Devils 3 Rangers 2 (shootout): Lundqvist saved it, but he couldn’t control it and that made all the difference.
The Rangers played a great hockey game and bombarded Martin Broduer with 30 shots, but could not find the difference maker so they headed to overtime.
There, despite an atrocious penalty call against Jaromir Jagr, they battled New Jersey throughout the period and managed to earn a shootout.
It was then that things got strange. Jagr didn’t want any part of the shootout and sat through the first four rounds. How the captain could remain bolted to the bench in a critical situation is hard to explain, so Tom Renney should be on alert for some uncomfortable questions.
But, the team shook it off and Michael Nylander’s goal put the Rangers in a tie in the shootout. However, New Jersey managed to find a goal off of a Jamie Langbrunner’s slapper that Lundqvist saved, but could not prevent from falling into the net.
