• White Sox 9, Yankees 4: A.J. Burnett will finish August with an 0-4 mark and a 7.80 ERA. An injury risk before signing with the Yankees, he has been all too healthy since the start of the 2009 season. On Friday, he gave up nine runs (eight earned) in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. Sergio Mitre came in to stop the bleeding and allowed one hit as he finished the game. The Yankees led this game briefly after Derek Jeter's groundout in the first, and Nick Swisher added a meaningless home run in the ninth. With Boston's win in Tampa Bay, the Yankees and Rays now sit 4 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox in the American League East. September could get mighty interesting.

  • Mets 2, Astros 1: The Mets are lucky the Astros can't hit or run the bases. They got just enough against former Met Nelson Figueroa and gladly reaped the benefits a Chris Johnson baserunning mistake. The Astros third baseman jogged home thinking there were three outs -- when there were only two. Mike Pelfrey pitched eight shutout innings. The Mets runs came on a David Wright sacrifice fly and a Ruben Tejada walk with the bases loaded.
