For most of the evening, Chad Pennington his teammates looked nearly perfect in Saturday night's 31-7 preseason drubbing of the host Indianapolis Colts, a team many see as a favorite to once again reach the AFC Championship. It was only a preseason game, but it's always a good sign when your defense holds Peyton Manning in check for a half, especially considering Gang Green started three rookie defensive backs in its Nickel package (CBs Derrick Strait and Roderick Bryant and SS Eric Coleman).

Things went about as well as possible for Pennington, who completed each of his first 10 passes to finish 10 of 11 for 169 yards and one touchdown in a the better part of a half of action. While former C.W. Post standout Ian Smart staked his claim to the squad with a 59-yard punt return for a score (a total of five returns for 114 yards), number two running back Lamont Jordan made headlines when he expressed his displeasure with being relegated to get his reps with the third offensive unit (while Jonathan Reese again spent time with the second team), but on Sunday, both he and coach Herman Edwards seemed to downplay whatever rift there may or may not be between the two.

With Brooks Bollinger out due to injury, Ricky Ray and Chris Finlen each saw plenty of second half action. Ray, a former Canadian Football League player, was impressive.

Interestingly, the Jets could not find a hotel anywhere within six miles of downtown Indianapolis, because of a Star Trek convention on the grounds adjacent to the RCA Dome.

This Friday, stadium talk will be on the minds of plenty of Jets fans, as the team plays host to the Giants in East Rutherford. It will be the team's first visit to the Meadowlands since announcing intentions to eventually move to a new stadium on the West Side of Manhattan - a move that would instantly turn the team into one of the most valuable franchises in pro sports.

Also, Mark Kriegel's biography of Joe Namath, which was recently released, may be of interest to fans - one instantly classic standout quote from a friend: "It was great. All the girls wanted to get laid by Joe. Everybody got leftovers."
