2006_01_slundqvist2.jpgHe won’t win, but Henrik Lundqvist deserves consideration for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie. He is third in save percentage, fourth in goal against average and has 18 wins. His latest victory came last night in Pittsburgh as he made several great saves to backstop the Rangers to a 4-2 victory.

Lundqvist would have had a shutout if not for a tough deflection off one of his defensemen and a mistake by another. Michal Rozsival tried to knock the puck out of the air with his hand and ended up putting it into his own net. Rozsival made amends in the third period when he took a great pass from Petr Prucha and broke a 2-2 tie. Michael Nylander added a goal a minute later to give the Rangers the final margin of victory.

The win keeps New York five points behind Philadelphia for first place in the Atlantic and in fifth place in the conference. The Rangers conclude their road trip Saturday night in Boston against Brian Leetch and the Bruins.
