Every now and then, Ask Gothamist will offer up some unsolicited advice. This week, we advise you to consider the following:

Adopt a pet.
As previously noted on Gothamist, the city's animal shelters are overwhelmed at the moment. If your building allows pets, maybe now is the time to adpot a cat or dog. Just please, please don't be like Paris Hilton and trade in your pet if its gets "too big".

Drink up for a good cause. On Wednesday, August 24th, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, CancerCare is hosting "Margarita Madness" at San Marco Restaurant (12 St. Marks Place). This end of the summer fiesta will feature margaritas and beers, as well as a variety of nibbles from south of the border. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. All proceeds will benefit CancerCare, which provides free counseling, educational programs, financial assistance and practical help to people with cancer, their loved ones, and health care professionals across the country. For advanced tickets, call 212.712.8323.
