2006_03_sgmac.jpgGerry McNamara won a national title in his freshman year at Syracuse and he wasn’t going to miss the tournament in his senior year. McNamara hit a game tying three-pointer with 10 seconds left to force overtime in Syracuse’s 86-84 upset over UConn in the Big East Tournament.

Syracuse will now face Georgetown in the semifinals tonight. The Hoyas outlasted Marquette 62-59 to advance. Pittsburgh and Villanova will meet in the other semifinal tonight after both cruised to easy victories. Villanova destroyed Rutgers 87-55 while Pitt beat West Virginia 68-57.

The question that everyone in the Big East is wondering about is how many teams will the newly expanded conference get into the NCAA Tournament? UConn, Villanova, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Georgetown seem to be locks. Syracuse and Marquette should have done enough to get in, but what about Cincinnati and Seton Hall? Both looked like they had good chances before losing in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday. For now, they will have to sweat it out until Sunday night.
