2006_10_smattingly.gifIt's being reported that current Yankees hitting coach Don Mattingly will be taking the seat next to Joe Torre next season as his bench coach. Mattingly would be the team's 5th bench coach in five years and would replace Lee Mazzilli, who may or may not be offered a position with the team for 2007. Torre's contract with the team ends at the end of 2007 and it seems like parting ways after next season would be a mutual decision. If promoted to manager in 2008, perhaps Mattingly can finally lead the Yankees to a World Series title.

Newsday reports that the possible candidates to replace Mattingly as hitting coach include Kevin Long from Columbus, Tim Raines, Chili Davis and Chris Chambliss with Long as the favorite. If Mattingly does take over, players should know that they shouldn't mess with him. Gothamist is curious if the team's position on facial hair will change under Mattingly.
