We were very tired, we were very merry
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold.

- from Recuerdo by Edna St. Vincent Millay

New York, as you know, is chock full of interesting, cheap and easily forgotten activities. The Staten Island Ferry is probably the best example of this. The workhorse of the mass transit system (65,000 people a day! On-time 96% of the time!) the ferry is often scoffed at by people who don't know what they are talking about.

If you're looking for something to do on the cheap this weekend, or anytime really, go take a ride on the Ferry. It's free, you can drink on board (they'll even sell you beer at very reasonable prices), it has some of the best views of the city, and did we mention it was free? While you're at it you could even get out and explore some of SI, maybe even catch a Staten Island Yankees game at the stunning stadium next to the terminal (seriously, the stadium has arguably one of the best panorama views of the city).
