Kevin Brown looks like the Kevin Brown of 1996-98. Yesterday he had the best game of the year, pitching 8 shutout innings and getting his ninth win of the year. The Yankees were able to tag Barry Zito for three early runs and then cruise home behind Brown's pitching for the 5-1 victory.

Kevin Brown struck out seven and allowed only four hits over the 8 innings. Barry Zito got into trouble in the second inning and that lead to 3 runs. It wasn't entirely Zito's fault as Alex Rodriguez reached base on left fielder Eric Byrnes error. Jorge Posada flied out to center for the first out of the inning. Then Hideki Matsui singled to right, A-rod to second. Ruben Sierra then doubled to left field and A-rod scored moving Matsui to third. Newly acquired John Olerud then doubled to deep left scoring Matsui and Sierra.

The Yankees were able to take two of three from the A's in the three-game series. The Yankees are now 9.5 games ahead of the Red Sox.Jason Giambi's return is still unknown. Javier Vasquez has pinkeye, but will not miss his start and Enrique Wilson should be out a few days with a bruised shoulder.

This weekend the Yankees welcome the Blue Jays back to the stadium for a three game series. Javier Vasquez (12-6, 4.16) will take on Sean Douglass (0-1, 4.91) tonight in the series opener. Saturday at 4:05 pm, Ted Lilly (8-7, 3.78) will match up against Orlando Hernandez ( 3-0, 3.00) in a re-match of their pitcher's duel from two weeks ago. Jon Lieber (7-7, 5.06) will match up against Miguel Batista ( 9-6, 4.08) in the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 pm.
