2006_04_sbarroids.jpgSometimes a team can win, but yet lose in the grand scheme of things. That's what happened to the Mets yesterday afternoon. While they defeated the Giants 9-7 in 11 innings and won a series for the first time at Pac BellSBC AT&T Park, Brian Bannister went down with a hamstring injury in the 6th inning. Bannister, a rookie that helped the Mets in their hot start, had to be helped off the field after lying on the ground after scoring a run in the 6th.

Despite Bannister going down, the Mets had several chances for a win in regulation. After taking a 3-run lead in the top of the 8th inning, the game should have been over. Unfortunately, Billy Wagner had his second blown save of the season, allowing 3 unearned runs in the 9th inning. Perhaps seeing Armando Benitez pitch the top of the 9th rubbed off some. The Giants tied the game on a two-run, two-out home run by Barry Bonds, who came in to pinch hit with a base open. To Wagner's credit, he pitched to Bonds, but he paid for it. Barroid's home run was the 711th in his career and puts him three behind Babe Ruth's career record. The Mets scored two in the 11th on hits by Chris Woodward and Jose Reyes to win the game.

After a day off today, the Mets head to the ATL for three against the Bravos.
