Maybe a new year will bring a change in fortunes for the Knicks. 2006 got off to a thrilling start as the Knicks beat the Suns 140-133 in triple overtime. Stephon Marbury silenced his critics for an evening with an impressive 32-point effort in 55 minutes of action.
Larry Brown appears to have come up with a set rotation (for now). Marbury, Robinson, Lee, Davis and Curry will start with Frye, Crawford, Taylor and Woods being the main men off the bench. Having an 8-9-man rotation may provide some stability to a team that seems to use a different lineup every night.
It wouldn’t be the Knicks however, if they didn’t have some offcourt drama to accompany their eighth win of the season. Before the game, the team announced that Jerome James has been suspended indefinitely. James is in the first year of a five-year deal that epitomizes Isiah Thomas’s profligate ways. In addition, Anfernee Hardaway has left the team to rehabilitate his knee in Houston. Hardaway is in the last year of his massive contract, but he cannot be traded unless healthy which may just save the Knicks from themselves.
