Interstate Bakeries Corporation, home of the Hostess line of snack cakes (including the ever-popular twinkie) and Wonder Bread, filed for bankruptcy protection today. The company will continue to operate, however, during Chapter 11 reorganization as it tries to get back on its feet.
Gothamist wonders whether the reasons for IBC's troubles are the investigations and accounting glitches referred to in the Associated Press report on the bankruptcy, or whether Twinkies, Ho-Ho's, and other sugary snacks are falling victim to America's increasingly irrational aversion to carbohydrates. Atkins is a popular excuse for food companies' poor performance these days. But whatever the cause, we're glad we'll still be able to stuff our faces with cream-injected sponge cakes while this industrial baker finds its bearings.
