The King is dead, long live Wendy's! Though McDonald's is still the $34.2 billion behemoth in the fast food industry, according to a new report coming next month from Technomic in 2011 Wendy's wiggled ahead of Burger King to become the second biggest fast food hamburger in all the land with sales of $8.5 billion in 2011 (BK had sales of $8.4 billion). Thank goodness for "juicy" burgers?

Before you feel too bad for the King though, don't. The restaurant still is number two worldwide and has far more restaurants than Wendy's.

Meanwhile, back in the States, Wendy's upset isn't the only shift in rankings that Technomic is reporting. Looking at fast food restaurant chains, as opposed to just burger chains, things have really shaken up in the past few years. Back in 2006 the hamburger and restaurant lists were identical with McDonald's on top followed by Burger King and Wendy's. But that was then. In the new world order McDonald's is still the king, but Subway is now number two ($11.4 billion in sales) and Starbucks is number three ($9.8 billion in sales). Both companies have seen huge growth in the past few years with subway sales up 48 percent in fives years and Starbucks sales up 39 percent.
