The Vendy Awards are rolling over to Governors Island in September, celebrating the best of NYC's mobile and market food vendors. There's always plenty to indulge in at the event and lots of very deserving winners to be selected, including the first ever vegan category this year at the fest, now in its 12th year.

There have been vegan vendors at the award event before—Cinnamon Snail has been a big winner in the past—but this is the first time vegan food makers will have their own category. Six animal-free purveyors will be going head-to-head, competing with things like vegan barbecue, veggie burgers and Indian cuisines.

Smorgasburg vets Monk's Meats will be offering their vegan barbecue, an oxymoron of type for the traditionally meat-centric food. Jerk Shack, who've been up at Vendy Plaza, will be doing Caribbean cuisine; Mysttik Masaala's in for homemade Indian; Vegan Bandwagon's doing veggie burgers and Yeah Dawg classic (but vegan) hot dogs. Finally, Bamboo Bites will be doing Southeast Asian street foods and snacks.
