What is it with Cali chains coming to NYC and BECsplaining of late? First came Eggslut's oozy offerings and now L.A. transplant Umami Burger jumps into the breakfast sandwich game at their fourth NYC restaurant, opening Monday in the Hudson Hotel.
It's the first Umami in the country to offer breakfast—employing their signature "fifth taste" flavors—so yes technically these are NYC born (though I'd bet money their test kitchen is in L.A.!). There are four breakfast sandwiches on the menu, each with some unique element like the miso-maple bacon on the classic Bacon, Egg & Cheese sandwich and smashed cheesy tots on the Sausage, Egg & Cheese, which is made with turkey sausage.
The Hudson features an over medium egg, avocado, more of that miso-maple bacon, tomato, arugula, American cheese and garlic aioli on their "branded" brioche bun. The vegetarian offering, Ohayo Umami, includes an over medium egg, the parmesan frico from the original Umami Burger burger, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, shiitake mushrooms and umami ketchup on brioche.
It's unclear what makes a bowl of tater tots "manly"—this seems to be an irritating tic deployed frequently on their menu—but you can order said potato nuggets topped with beer-cheddar, bacon, onion strings, chives and a sunny side up egg.
