It's almost 2017, but on Monday and Wednesday, the Museum at Eldridge Street promises to take you back to the early 20th century with a walking tour of the Lower East Side. The tour visits multiple streets and sites featured in their Jewish Ghetto in Postcards exhibition and revisits a time when the Lower East Side was home to the world's largest Jewish population—and there'll be plenty of cider to keep you warm. They'll also be paying a visit to The Pickle Guys and other local treat vendors along the way. You can purchase Monday tickets ($30) here and Wednesday tickets ($30) here.
If you're looking to get a start to your year-end festivities ahead of time, Williamsburg's Little Choc Apothecary is celebrating an early Russian-style New Year with a five-course meal on Thursday. The totally vegan menu includes a traditional Russian herring salad, latkes with dill crème fraiche and rainbow caviar, and quinoa "pork"-stuffed cabbage rolls with tomato broth, honey carrot french fries, and horseradish mashed potato. The dessert—also vegan—is a Russian "anthill" cake with clotted cream and peppermint chocolate. Oh, and there's plenty of wine, too. You can purchase tickets ($65 - $85) here.
On Thursday, Magnolia Bakery on the Upper West Side is hosting a 21-plus cupcake decorating class—feel free to bring your own wine. They'll be teaching you how to decorate and ice cupcakes with their signature swirl, sprinkles, decorations, and more. When you're done, you'll be able to take home six of the cupcakes you made—in both vanilla and buttercream flavors—plus more sprinkles and decorations, and an icing kit. Tickets are $60 and are going fast.
Also on Thursday, The Regal is hosting Mussel Mania, a mussel-eating extravaganza. For $25, you get two full pounds of steamed mussels served with garlic bread, fries, and a beer. There are a few options: classic with white wine, herbs, and garlic; coconut curry with lemongrass, coconut milk, and red chili; Brooklyn ale, steamed with shallots, pancetta, kale, and red peppers; drunken mussels with vodka sauce; and lobster mussels with chunks of Maine lobster and a spicy red sauce. You purchase tickets here, or make a reservation by calling 718-388-4626.
