Last week was a friendly reminder of what it feels like to live in a rainforest. The scorching high heat coupled with humidity that reached the steam levels of the Russian Baths on East 9th street, had us retreating to air-conditioning. In these conditions you need something refreshing to keep you going and when water with lemon just isn’t strong enough, may we suggest these thirst quenching wines…
2005 Teruzzi and Puthod Vernaccia, Italy
This wine is light and crisp but has body in all the right places. Layers of floral, mineral and citrus notes add just the right amount of depth without weighting it down. Pair this wine with steamers or oysters and you have the perfect foil to the heat.
2005 Agnes et Didier Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru, France
Somehow this wine manages to be light and rich at the same time. While it has the weight you would expect from the chardonnay grape, the flavors of lemon zest, citrus and granite keep it lively.
2005 Hautes Noelles Serge Batard Muscadet Sur lie, France
This wine is the perfect summer sipper and it’s not just because refreshingly inexpensive. The crisp lime, lemon and mineral notes pair beautifully with light summer dishes.
Stick to white or dry rose wines with a healthy amount of acidity for optimal refreshment levels. Light and crisp is the way to go make it through these tropical steam baths. Gelato doesn’t hurt either.
