TOMS—the ethically-minded retail outlet responsible for those slip on shoes seen everywhere in the summer—have opened their first shop and cafe in NYC on Elizabeth Street. The hybrid outlet sells handbags, shoes, glasses and jewelry on one side, each with the clothier's special "one for one" company motto. For each pair of shoes sold, one pair is donated to a child; for each pair of glasses sold, someone in need gets help with their vision; and so on. The goodwill extends to their coffee program as well, with a safe water program in collaboration with Water For People.

TOMS Roasting Co., the second part of the operation, sells espresso drinks, pastries and pour over coffees, plus bags of sustainably-sourced, small farmer beans. For the charitable angle, every bag sold purports to supply clean water for one week to the coffee's origin country, while every cup supplies clean water for one person for one day. Munchies include cheese scones, Balthazar croissant and danish plus One Girl Cookies.

Continuing the theme of community, an outdoor patio serves as a year-round spot to take a load off, with a gas fireplace providing heat in the winter. Snag a book from the Book Swap shelves or leave one of your own for another bibliophile. There are also plans for events inside the store, from "knitting gangs" to movie nights to beverage tasting events.
