Before you take a dip into that tub of Frito Lay brand Sabra hummus, be advised that the company is recalling 30,000 cases of the blended chickpea carcasses because they may be contaminated with listeria. The company issued the recall yesterday after discovering the organism inside a sample collected at a Michigan store on March 30th.
Affected packages include the Classic and Garlic flavors with Best Before dates of May 11th and May 15th. They include Classic tubs in 10 oz, 30 oz, 32 oz and 17 oz Six Packs and 23.5 oz Dual Packs containing both Classic and Garlic flavors.
The FDA has offered a terrifying primer on Listeria monocytogenes, which includes the words "high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea." Infections can also cause "miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women" and can be fatal in kids, elderly people and people with weakened immune systems. Makes an animal toe sound almost appetizing!
