There's no official word as to when Shake Shack returns to Madison Square Park, but neighboring food market Mad. Sq. Eats has decreed this season's opening day to be Friday, May 1st. The annual gourmand playground operated by UrbanSpace occupies the space across from Madison Square Park, filling it with a few dozen food purveyors that operate daily throughout the month.

This year's rookie vendors including all'onda chef Chris Jaeckle's quick service sushi spot Uma Temakeria, as well as Texas offerings from nearby Hill Country Barbecue Market. West Village tapas eatery Barraca will be operating a pop-up Paella Shack in the space as well, plus cheesesteaks by The Truffleist and frozen sweets from Italian import Gelato ti Amo.

The full lineup also includes returning cult favorites like Calexico, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Melt Bakery and Roberta's Pizza. Though local pencil-pushers are likely to crowd the market during their lunch breaks, the relaxed 9 p.m. closing time is good for post-happy hour noshing when the herd thins out a bit.
