jar_whims_24.JPGThere must be something in the air -- temperatures dropping or the crisp winds of fall, perhaps -- but whatever it is, it has caused two of our favorite local artisanal picklers to launch tasty new products. First, Jon Orren at Wheelhouse has created the Ploughman's Pickle, his take on the Branston Pickle Relish that graces the traditional English Ploughman's lunch. His version contains the wort from Sixpoint Craft Ales' Brownstone Ale (wort is the liquid created by mashing malted barley; it is used in the beer brewing process), and is available for sale at Blue Apron, Stinky Bklyn, Bedford Cheese Shop, Marlow & Sons, Whole Foods Bowery Beer Store, at the Union Square Greenmarket on Mondays, and on the Wheelhouse Pickles website.

11.jpgRick Field of Rick's Picks has introduced Whup Asp, asparagus pickled in a brine of white wine vinegar, pink peppercorns, hot cherry peppers and orange juice. The asparagus is sourced locally, from farmer Kurt Alstede of Chester, New Jersey. Whup Asp is available at any of Rick's greenmarket stands or online.

Both are small-batch limited editions, so get them while they last.
