BREEZY'S BBQ

A newcomer to the beach fare found around 97th Street, Breezy's BBQ is stretching its Brooklyn food truck operation out of Good Co.'s backyard and onto the shore this summer with brisket, pulled pork ($5), and a bevy of side orders, including their fantastic collard greens ($2). Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
CARACAS

With locations in the East Village and Williamsburg, Caracas continues to spread the delicious gospel of arepas, small South American sandwiches made with warm and spongy cornmeal pitas and all sorts of savory fillings, ranging from meat to avocado to plantain to tofu to all of the above and so much more. This summer Caracas once again returns to its boardwalk outpost at Beach 106th Street, where you'll find a selection of satisfying arepas from their regular menu, as well as a variety of frozen drinks. The very last thing I ate on the beach at the end of last summer was an arepa from Caracas, and I've decided that it's the perfect beach food (other than cherries). Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
CITYSTICKS

If you prefer your frozen treats a bit more solid and served on a stick, Citysticks is your seaside ice pop savior. Their concession stand will be rolling out some fantastic-sounding frozen flavors this year, including strawberry mint, mango caipirinha, cucumber berry, and black grape kiwi (which features a chocolate sauce drizzle). Made with real fruit and often augmented by spices and savory vegetables, we recommend saving some space in your cooler and stocking up before you hit the beach. Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
THE WHARF

The Wharf is sort of hidden behind a gas station off Beach Channel Drive, but it's worth finding. Once there, grab a drink at the bar and have a seat out on the back deck, where you may even see some local patrons arriving by boat. This is your no frills, spacious dive bar with a fantastic viewâand it's pretty perfect as is. It can get rowdy at times, but you'll often find you have the place to yourself if it's not too late. Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
ROCKAWAY BEACH SURF CLUB

A positively bitchin' "Live Surf Die" skeleton mural and news of a just-finished backyard BBQ truck means that the Surf Club's patio will be a must this summer for anyone in need of fuel after a sandy-toed day on the waves. The space is very committed to the local surf community and regularly hosts film events and surf clinics while proudly repping its beach-tinged style. Non-surfers are always welcome and the costume contests and regular live music are a blast no matter who you are, but it might be a good idea to brush up on the wave reports before you belly up to the bar. Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
RIPPERS

A short walk from some of the best surfing in the Rockaways, the amazing burgers and cheese fries at Rippers are making its concessions-style space more famous (and crowded) every weekend. But don't limit yourself: hungry and parched longboard riders swear by the hot dogs, burritos, sangria, and beer selection. With picnic table seating, live music, and an expansive ocean view, it's worth the trip over to 86th Street. (Scott Heins)

98-1 Shore Front Parkway // Yelp // Website

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
THAI KITCHEN BY THE SEA

It's a toss-up between Thai Rock and Thai Kitchen by the Sea when it comes to spicy noodle and fried rice dishes, so it might come down to how far your newly bronzed calves are willing to schlep. The excellent Seaspray Basil includes scallops, squid, and shrimp in a sweet basil chili sauce to which fried coconut ice cream is a perfect compliment. After the sun has set on a day of swimming and sunning a good meal is mandatory before making the long trek back to the boroughs. (Scott Heins)

67-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd // Yelp

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
CONNOLLY'S

Tucked behind a charming front porch and away from the beachside crowds you'll find the most beloved frozen drinks in all of Rockaway. Connolly's boasts all the classic Irish pub accoutrements (nice woodwork, incredible hospitality, Guinness on tap) and is a far cry from the hip-styled bars, stands, and trucks that have only just sprung up along the beaches in the last few years. The place has a more local and unadorned vibe, which ought to be nice after a summer's day of dodging Instagrammers. Bring cash, get a piña colada, chase it with a stout, and savor. (Scott Heins)

155 Beach 95th Street // Yelp // Facebook

 Photos by Katie Sokoler/Gothamist
CONCHOS

Another excellent place to beat the heat and soothe your sweet tooth, Conchos offers up smoothies, ice cream, juices, and shakes of all stripes. Also on hand will be Blue Bottle's NOLA iced coffee, and the space is shared by Caracas Arepa Bar, which means that with a flask of rum ready to spike up your smoothie, you won't ever need to leave their seaside concessions spot. (Scott Heins)

106 Shore Front Parkway // Website // Facebook

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
DiCOSMO'S

Real made-to-order Italian ices are things of perfect beauty and this diamond-patterned stand delivers. Ignore the hordes waiting in line for Rockaway Taco and snag a lemon, grapefruit, or mango ice served in a cup and best attacked with a spoon. The shop's available flavors change daily and depending on what you order little flecks of fruit, Oreo, and chocolate will inhabit your sub-zero treat. That's how you know it's the good stuff. (Scott Heins)

95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd // Yelp // Website

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
BO's

Located by Rockaway Taco and DiCosmo's is Bo's, a newcomer to the area. We had actually never heard of it, nor can we find any information about it... but they serve up everything from juices to yogurt to hamburgers to an egg and cheese with avocado. Gotta respect a place that'll serve you a cheeseburger with your pressed juice.

95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
UMA'S

This place has gotten some great reviews (even Patti Smith likes it) since opening last year. They serve "Central Asian Cuisine with a rock n' roll feel," which means Squash Bichaki, Shish Kabobs, crispy fried dough for dessert, and more. They're also setting up a little spot at the Beach 97th Street concession stand this summer. Photos by Sai Mokhtari/Gothamist
SAYRA'S

This place opened last summer, becoming the area's first wine bar. Offering a selection of wines, beers, and cocktails, they also have a menu featuring everything from turkey burgers to summer squash parm. And if it's too nice out to enjoy their cozy, wooden interior... they've also got a sweet outdoor area (or as they're calling it now: Bier Garden), where they even screen movies. Photos by Tod Seelie/Gothamist
ROCKAWAY TACO

If, like many of us, it's against your bloody principles to wait on interminable lines for food in a city with myriad options, the formidable queue for Rockaway Taco may be cause for alarm. It shouldn't be. Look at it this way: you've had a long, salty day at the beach, you're mysteriously fatigued from... doing nothing beyond napping and Frisbee, and a little burned and buzzed on top of that, and you have little energy left to do anything besides stagger around like a zombie dragging a beach bag. Zoning out and standing on line under these circumstances isn't the worst thing in the world!

Buy a bottle of water or something from the deli and wait it outâRockaway Taco's kitchen is a well-oiled machine, and even if the line stretches to the corner, you'll be devouring succulent fried fish tacos in 30 minutes or less. (Halfway through the line and you can sate yourself with an Italian ice from DiCosmo's.) This place never fails to hit the spot, and your subway ride home will be greatly enhanced with a full belly. (It's not on the boardwalk and thus much closer to the train.) Or swing by in the morning on your way to the beach when it's less of a scene, that works too. But don't miss it. (John Del Signore)

95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd // Website

Photos by Sai Mokhtari/GothamistTHAI ROCK
Part plush upscale dining, part raucous music joint, Thai Rock hasn't lost a step since rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy and is something of a safe haven from the beer bongs and sleeveless tees. The restaurant's fried rice and curry dishes are a blessed (and spicy) change of pace from the burgers and fries that seem to line each beach, and weekend live blues, rock, and jazz sets will accompany your gorgeous sunset view of Jamaica Bay. The brunch may be the best part, though: $22 gets you an entree, liquor drink, coffee, and dessert.

375 Beach 92nd Street // Yelp // Website

The place is built on a pier above Jamaica Bay, and features gorgeous views (including of the Manhattan skyline).
VEGGIE ISLAND

[NOTE: We've reached out to Veggie Island to find out if they'll be reopening elsewhere, but they are currently closed and Bo's has moved in.] Born out of an allegiance of farm stands and co-ops, this small all-natural stand is light on seating but heavy on produce. On their way to the counter patrons are greeted by crates of just-picked fruits and vegetables and the menuâheavy on salads, tacos, and soupsâmakes use of that bounty. Expect to find marinated kale and some of the best cilantro you've ever tried. Alternatively, if your own picnic or grilling plans have hit a supply snag, you can stock up on seasonal cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes and prepare them to your own tastes. One cannot weekend on cheeseburgers alone. (Scott Heins)

Yelp // Facebook
