Yesterday's record-setting blizzard (Snowpocalypse Now) may have shut down Broadway, and vehicular traffic, and vast above-ground tracts of the subway system, and Bruuuuuuuuuce at the Garden, but not even the snowiest day in NYC history could stop Donut Fest 2016 from going down as planned in Williamsburg.
The sold-out celebration of those delicious breakfast pastries and their spiritual liquid counterpart coffee (you could also get booze if you wanted) was held at Verboten, and despite brutal conditions down by the river, a large crowd and almost all the vendors managed to show up. This was the first time Donut Fest was held here in the city (there have been three in Chicago) and the line-up of pastry makers was solid, with a nice mix of usual suspects and local joints.
Dough was in the house, for example, handing out chocolate-frosted minis, as was Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto of The Doughnut Project, who arrived with many trays of their lovely Beet-Ricotta confection. Other donuts of note included an old-school cruller from Mike's of Bay Ridge; an excellent mini S'Mores (marshmallow and graham cracker on top; chocolate cream within) via Park Slope's Du Jour Bakery; and a double-decker vegan delight courtesy Bushwick's Dun-Well. Gorilla, Brooklyn Roasting, and Cafe Grumpy were on hand to keep everyone caffeinated.
There was a competition because this is America, with Glaze Donuts taking the Judge's trophy for their cannoli, and The Doughnut Project's "These Beets Are Dope" winning the People's Choice.
Donut Fest was structured like all of these things, with a flat fee ($50 for early VIP entry; $35 for the two later sessions) getting you tastings from each vendor. A DJ, a disco ball, and endless Instagrammable moments provided the entertainment, and 100% of all profits were donated to Food Bank For New York City.
