After the distressing video of a wee rat frolicking in the olives at the Upper West Side store, Fairway Market introduced partial covers for its olives and other antipasti. These thin plastic covers shielded only about 75% of the barrels, because a wedge was cut out for the spoons. Now the supermarket has replaced those with sturdier plastic lids that can cover the whole barrel—but only if customers shut them. When we observed the new lids at Fairway yesterday, two of the barrels were left wide open—just waiting for rodents to feast on some briny olives!
Fairway has been working on "renovations" to improve the store, and there are some earlier-than-usual closings at the UWS location this week.
