Pickle lovers will be doing barrel rolls this Sunday at the first-ever Peck Slip Pickle Festival, hosted by the great artisanal New Amsterdam Market. This will be a celebration of "all things pickled, preserved, and fermented," with more than 20 additional specialty producers joining the market's regular roster of vendors. Admission is free, but if you've got $13 burning a hole in your pocket, buy an advance ticket that gets you three regional beers being poured by Fresh Salt, plus a bialy from Hot Bread Kitchen!

Speaking of bialys, renowned food writer (and author of The Bialy Eaters) Mimi Sheraton will give a talk about her search for the authentic bialy, beginning with her own New York childhood memories and with stops in Bialystok, Paris, Chicago & Israel. She'll be joined by Jessamyn Waldman, founder and director of Hot Bread Kitchen, who'll reveal the secrets of her bialy recipe and explain why it goes so well with pickles. The pickle/bialy talk starts at noon, and is free, but RSVPs are required. Email info@newamsterdammarket.org to get on the list.

The festival (at South Street Between Beekman Street & Peck Slip) runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Peruse the full list of pickle vendors here.

, plus Hot Bread Kitchen, bringing bialys, and Fresh Salt, pouring a selection of regional beers.

An advance ticket purchase lets attendees try all three beers offered plus a bialy, but individual pours of each beer and bialys are also available. Market-goers may peruse the market - which is expanded specially for this event - sampling or buying the array of pickled and preserved goods offered, plus the usual rotation of artisan foods featured.

Additionally, winners of a Home Pickling Competition will be selected, and Mimi Sheraton will describe her experience in finding the perfect bialy across the street at “In a Pickle about Bialys,” hosted by Pasanella & Son (115 South Street).
