There is no question that Pat LaFrieda provides some fine meat to some of the city's finest restaurants—the Shake Shack lines would crumble without their LaFrieda blends. But what in the world is a wholesale meat purveyor doing selling a $6.99 iPad app? As one cynic in the Gothamist HQ put it, "Anybody who would pay $7 on this iPad app is an idiot and would be better served spending seven minutes talking to a butcher in real life."
The app, made with a company called zero point zero, is pretty much what you would expect of something called "Pat LaFrieda's Big App for Meat." There are videos (50 minutes!) about meat, areas where you can browse cuts of meat (in 3D!), pictures of meat you can look at as well as a place to upload your own meat porn, social media integration (tweet the cut of meat you just liked on Facebook?), an area where you can order LaFrieda meat (naturally) and, our favorite part, something called the "Great Meat 101 Quiz" where users can "test their butcher knowledge and compete against others via Apple’s Game Center. Fun for adults and kids!" All of which just brings Bovine University to our minds...
Seriously though. There is nothing wrong with learning on your iPad, but if you really want to learn something about butchering and meat—talk to a butcher first. They really do know what they are talking about!
