Freelance photo editor Dana Loia has an abiding passion, bordering on obsession, for French macarons, those elegant little meringue-based concoctions comprised of sweet filling sandwiched between two firm cookies. (Of course, these are not to be confused with the coconut macaroons we know in America.) But no mere photograph can compete with the sensation of a perfectly baked macaron crumbling and melting in your mouth. So after graduating with honors from the Pastry and Baking program at New York’s Institute of Culinary Education, Loia switched careers and started Dana's Bakery, your new source for magnificent macarons that also happen to be gluten-free.

Loia sent recently some samples to Gothamist HQ, and they were inhaled with gusto and uniform approval. We recommend picking up a few for yourself—they're available for delivery on her website and also sold in Henri Bendel, Dylan's Candy Bar and Lincoln Center. A variety pack costs $30—the most popular flavors include S'mores, PB&J and Fruity Cereal—and there's always a limited-edition flavor of the month.
