June 23: A Taste of the Village
Get a taste of Greenwich Village restaurants from the splurges (Cru, Blue Hill), to the budget-conscious (Von Singh's), and one of Gothamist's favorite hang-outs, Otto, at this fundraiser for Washington Square Park. The Village Alliance sponsors this party, held rain or shine in the big tent in Washington Square Park from 6-8 pm. Tickets are $35. For more information call Village Alliance at (212) 777-2173.
Join the first annual event featuring the bounty of New York's gourmet marketplaces including Ciao Bella Gelato, Artisanal Cheese, and D'Artagnan (object of much Gothamist stalking). For those who are interested in learning how to be a well-rounded New York gourmet, they'll be a cooking demonstration by Kerry Heffernan, executive chef at Eleven Madison Park, a home entertaining course by Yen Ngo, Caterer/Owner of Real Food Catering, and a wine pairing presentation by Romy Dorotan and Peter Kaminsky, of Food & Wine magazine and Pig Perfect, to complete the NY gourmet experience. All net proceeds from this event go to benefit End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT-USA) based in Brooklyn. Tickets, which are available online, are $75 in advance and $100 the day of the event. Metropolitan Pavilion Gallery, 123 West 18th Street, 4th Floor, 7-10pm.
June 28: The Wine Guy at Institute for Culinary Education
No need to be intimidated by picking out wine. Let "The Wine Guy" walk you through it. Through discussion, written materials and tastings, Andy Besch, owner of West Side Wine and author of the upcoming The Wine Guy: Everything You Want to Know about Buying and Enjoying Wine from Someone Who Sells It (Morrow, 2005), will focus on: avoiding “purchase paralysis”; how to figure out what you like: putting your senses to work to discern body, balance and flavors; putting your own wine guy to the test; and smart customer do’s and don’ts. At the end of the session, you’ll be well on your way to having the confidence to step into any wine store and walk away with a perfect bottle every time. $70.
