If warging abilities and greenseeing are something you've dreamed of—or you just like really strong beers—then Ommegang's latest Game of Thrones-themed beer installment is most definitely for you. The brewery announced that Three-Eyed Raven—named for the bird/tree man who haunts Bran Stark's dreams—will be the fifth in its brews related to the insanely popular show (and book series), set for release sometime next spring when the next season airs on HBO. Hurry up winter, we're done with you already.
Per the brewery, on their dark saison-style beer:
Three-Eyed Raven is brewed with a carefully crafted mixture of specialty malts, including malted rye, midnight wheat (provides depth of color but not the roasty flavor of a dark beer), and dark candi sugar. It's hopped with Hallertau Spalt Select, Tettnang, and Bravo hops, which give the beer a spicy, fruity character. A fair amount of late-addition hops are added for character. Three-Eyed Raven is fermented and bottle-conditioned with Ommegang's signature house yeast.
It also boasts a feisty 7.2% ABV, a bit less potent than last year's offering, Valar Morghulis, but more than the dragon-inspired Fire & Blood from season three.
Bran Stark's plotline has been a bit of a slow burn for those who watch the show but haven't read the books, though last season's exciting finale shows that there's much more to Bran's storyline than has been revealed so far. Ironically, Bran won't appear in the upcoming season, as showrunners didn't want the show to move too far past where Bran's storyline is in George R. R. Martin's series. Maybe the beer is a consolation prize?
