Have you ever been to that little cocktail bar tucked away below MacDougal Street? The Up & Up is housed in the old Gaslight Cafe space (1958-1971), and serves up incredible drinks to those who can afford them (they run $15 and up... and up). The dimly lit lounge is gorgeous, and now the owner, Matt Piacentini, and beverage director, Chaim Dauermann, have a new spot in Kips Bay called Stay Gold. They opened the doors earlier this month.
The space holds up to 150 people, throughout three distinct areas — "A gilded antique 20-seat bar anchors the front space; a back lounge houses a second lilac marble-topped bar and several comfortable booths; and a garden space can hold 40 seated guests with additional room for people to stand."
The bar areas each feature a frozen machine that dispenses the Stay Cold, the bar’s namesake bourbon and beer slushy. They also have 16 specialty cocktails (some from the Up & Up menu) to kick things off. These include the aforementioned frozen concoction, along with the Screen Door Slam (Maker's Mark Bourbon, Aperol, Vanilla, Honey, Absinthe Disco Volante, Aperol, Fords Gin, Absinthe, Clarified Milk, Lemon), and their Insanely Good Gin & Tonic (Brooklyn Gin, Suze, Lime, Angostura Bitters, Q Tonic).
They've also got you covered with some high-end bar snacks, like their Fancy Triscuits (Caviar, Crème Fraiche, Boiled Egg), Togarashi popcorn, and homemade potato chips (ranging from $5 to $13).
Important note: There is a nightly happy hour from 5-7 which features $5 beers, and $9 wines and Gold Fashioneds (a take on the Old Fashioned).
