The Washington Square Diner, which stayed open last night to serve the weary, was reportedly rewarded for its steadfastness when an MTA supervisor placed an order for 360 sandwiches at around 2 a.m. "I was shocked," employee Alfredo Hernandez told DNAinfo, "I thought it was a joke. I was thinking he was playing with me."
Three cooks worked on the order, which comprised of chicken salad, tuna salad, ham and cheese, roast beef and turkey sandwiches. Perhaps the sandwiches (and now-tropical storm Irene) did the trick: while the subway and bus service remains closed, seven out of the MTA's nine bridges and tunnels are currently open, with the Cross Bay and Marine Parkway bridges being the only ones fully suspended.
