Bushwick standby/my former neighbor Tandem Bar shuttered about a year and a half ago. Tandem was an early entry in the history of Bushwick's hip-ification, and though the neighborhood's bar scene has exploded in the years since, it was sad to see it go. But today, Tandem's space reopens as Mad Tropical, an offshoot of Greenpoint spot Tender Trap. Rejoice, patrons, but please note your voices carry quite loudly down Troutman Street.

Bedford & Bowery reported
earlier this week that Mad Tropical had a "soft opening" party but today is its official grand opening. If you stop by, you can expect "party size" 16-oz. cocktails; Latin-American inspired fare courtesy Donna Chiquita, an offshoot of Leif Huckman's popular Donna restaurant in Williamsburg, with menu items including cauliflower tacos and tlayuda; and, if you're me, some harrowing flashbacks to all the people I made out with in 2012.

It also appears Mad Tropical will make use of Tandem's infamous back room space, with a number of DJs on the roster for last weekend's soft-opening. We reached out to the bar to get more information but were informed "emails are sometimes answered once a year," so don't hold your breath.

Mad Tropical is located at 236 Troutman Street between Wilson and Knickerbocker Avenues in Bushwick, Brooklyn (madtropical.com).
